Introduction

The global process of urbanization brings every year more people into urban areas. Civil engineering systems are developed for the good functioning of those dense societies, providing energy, water and isolation from external weather and so on.

Those engineering systems constructed mainly decades ago need nowadays maintenance interventions in order to fulfill their functions. The growing complexity of those systems and their relations requires a sophisticated approach to identify the best intervention strategies and optimize them when necessary.

For this assignment we’ll be looking into more detail about:

  • how different systems can be integrated as components into a greater ‘system of systems';
  • how different maintenance scenarios can be defined exploring each systems interventions behaviors;
  • how a new Life-Cycle Inventory and Life-Cycle Analysis can be defined for the integrated systems;
  • finally, how a multi-objective optimization can help us find the best maintenance strategy.
