1. Introduction.

Maintaining civil engineering systems is essential to ensure they remain functional, efficient, and sustainable, especially in rapidly growing urban areas. In Berlin, for instance, the population has increased significantly due to migration, leading to rising rent prices and heightened demand for housing and their maintenance, as highlighted in the Housing Market Report Berlin (2024). Maintenance in existing buildings is considered particularly challenging in any case and requires a high degree of advanced planning in order to sustain the rapid pace.

This project focuses on integrating and optimizing maintenance strategies for two interconnected systems at the heart of urban infrastructure: District heating System for source of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems and residential buildings. HVAC systems, which rely on district heating source as a sustainable and efficient heat source, are essential for maintaining indoor air quality and thermal comfort, while residential buildings form the core of urban living spaces.

The integration of these systems highlights the interdependencies between their components, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to maintenance. Utilizing a Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework, this project examines the interaction between District heating system and residential buildings, analyzing maintenance scenarios that account for both environmental and economic impacts.

Through multi-objective optimization techniques ( Pareto frontiers), the project aims to develop strategies that maximize operational efficiency (minimize maintenance duration), minimize disruptions, and balance life-cycle costs. This approach addresses key challenges such as aligning intervention schedules, managing system interdependencies, and meeting sustainability goals. The outcomes of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the development of cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable maintenance plans for integrated civil engineering systems.
