The integration of multiple civil engineering models in this assignment is developed to imitate a complex urban system. The connection points between each model will overlap and create an engineering challenge on how to properly integrate and design the models to function optimally as a unit while respecting the constraints and limits of each model and the environment.

The integrated urban system in this assignment consists of:

• Fire station building

• Pipeline system

• Road

• Railway track

The goal in this assignment is to integrate the civil engineering models above into one with a mountainous terrain as an extra constraint towards the design and parameter of the models.

The engineering challenge would be on how to design the optimal connection between point A and point B while taking the constraints and limitations of the above-mentioned models. The optimum is defined by the performance criteria, which will be described in the following chapters.

As shown in the graph, the fire station serves as the demand point for both the road and the pipeline. The starting points of the structures are separately located. They provide road access and water supply to the building which sits on top of a mountain in a rough terrain. In addition, the existing railway has to be crossed by the road and pipeline to reach the fire station. The minimizing of route length and other performance criteria lead to a cost-optimal design. With the help of the parametric model, the routing can be analyzed and will support the decision-making process of the designers.
