Tunnel

1Tunnel Project

The proposed engeneering product here is a tunnel that will be used as a part of a wide infrastructure network for bicycles, pedestrians and cars.

Initial Ontology

The initial ontology focused on a tunnel as a wider concept. Points that were included such as users like railways were excluded and/or changed in the merged ontology model. The initial ontology furthermore focused on two tunnel designs that had different parameters such as length, heigth and width.

Parametrisation

Within the parameterization part of the tunnel, several features were included to make it a solid engeneering project. One of these features were columns in the middle of the tunnel that were stabelizing it. Another of these features were girders on top of the tunnel to cope with the huge leads inflicted on it. Within the model, a quick change in number of girders and columns, width, length and heigth made the tunnel adapt to different scenarios.

From an engineering perspective, it is important that the carrying structure of the tunnel is sufficient to withstand all possible loads that might endanger the stability of the structure. Thinking about stability, I created walls on each side of the tunnel that are load bearing, while as a special support I integrated columns at both sides of the tunnel that have very little distance between them. On top of this, the round columns in the middle of the tunnel were created to make a greater width of the tunnel possible (up to 20m). Measurements of the round columns are d=0,3m and the square once within the all w=0,3m. Round colums have been installed as an asthetic element. The columns and beams for the frame of the tunnel are a bit thicker. Here, measurements are w= 0,5m. The columns at the side of the tunnel consist of steel profiles, which are surroundes with concrete as a special protection agains fire and heat. Steel loses its stability fast when confronted with high temperatures, so the concrete around it provides further stability in case of a fire or an explosion. The columns in the middle of the tunnel consist of reinforced concrete columns. These columns are prefabricated so that they can be installed quickly.
