Bike Sharing System

What is it all about?

A very new and important part of the public transportation system is a bike sharing system. Everyone can rent a bike for short distances in the city to avoid driving by car and reduce the environmental pollution without buying an own bike.

Ontology with Protégé

In order to create an ontology you will have to think about the object you want to model including its interface to its environment. While planning bike sharing systems there are three important things you must think about. First you should think about the components of a bike sharing system, second you have to think about the way the users can rent the bike, register them or pay the bike rental and finally you must think about the places where to offer the bikes.

These three parts of the system of the bike sharing system and their components and subcomponents were meant to be shown in the ontology, as shown in the following figure. Please click on it to get a enlarged view.

Parametric Model with Blender and Sverchok

With the blender file, you are suppose to implement one of the chosen subsystems above into a model. For the bike sharing station the components of the station and their geometry were beeing linked together into a model. A block of concrete, where one can put the bicycle in and lock it for its next usage.  The most important think is the size of the block, as it directly influences the costs of the station. The parameters that influence the size of the block are the radius, the thickness and width of the wheel of the bike.

For the model the editor chose the input parameters: minimal thickness of the concrete, the safety distance between the wheel of the bike and the concrete block, the depth of the slide-in module and the radius of the end of the slide-in module. The calculation of the geometry that identifies the concrete block is left for the software. The result is shown in the following figure.

In the 3D view the model looks like this.

What is new?

To combine the models, the ontology had to be changed a little bit. Some electricity supply had been added for the terminal of the station, because this is one interface point to the other ontologies.

the blender file changed a little bit as well. In the new model it was possible to change the number of blocks in one row ore the number of bikes at one station.
