2. Integrated Maintenance Planning

As explained in the Integration context of the civil systems the three systems the earth-rock dam, the pavement, and the highway bridge will be seen as a co-system that effect each-other in different ways. They are designed for a lifetime that reaches 50-60 years and serve an infrastructure to be used from the society. During their lifetime there are different factors that affect their functions like systematic usage, weather conditions or other events that can lead to deterioration or failure.

For each system there is a maintenance plan to be followed so every system can reach their maximum longevity. Since the systems exist in a codependency, different frequencies, and occurrences of repair measurements of one system can also affect the other systems.

Therefore, it is our goal here to maximize the product availability by reaching these objectives:

  • Minimize the total duration of the interruptions
  • Maximize the distance between two successive interventions

While integrating the maintenance plans shown above, we have in total 111 days of interruptions for 60 years lifetime. To achieve the goal, we see at the beginning, we rank the alternatives so, that we get the best alternative according to our preference.

In the figure below we have the ranking of 289 alternatives.

In the first graph below the preference is marked by the Pareto Frontier (the blue line), and the dark dot is the best alternative based on our defined preference to have a low intervention duration and the maximum distance between interventions. In the second graph then we have a new pareto frontier with one black dot as the best new design option for the preference that all the interventions are carried out at the same time. So, the maintenance of one system is executed when the maintenance of the other systems is complete.
