1.1 Airplane Hangar

A hangar is a closed structure whose main purpose it is to provide shelter to aircraft, protect the aircraft against weather and sunlight and is used for manufacturing, maintenance, repair as well as storage of aircraft.

The hangar does have an important role in the airports day to day buisness. Without the hangar it would not be possible to guarantee smooth and safe operations. It is in close relationship with the runway since it is alligned just next to it and the runway is the main interface between the hangar and the rest of the airport. The hangars size is closely related to the the runway size since the size of the hangar aswell as the runway do define the maximal plane size that can access the airport.

A Hangar can be found in countless forms and sizes. This  hangar has a rectangular floor plan and a portal frame shaped cross section.
The hangar does consists of the following elements

  • frames ;
  • connecting beams between the frames;
  • wind brace;
  • walls; and
  • roof.

A more detailed view can be seen in the ontology below.

Ontology of the hangar

Except for the uses and the material all parts of the ontology have been implemented. However a complete hangar would still need to get a suitable slab and some foundations depending on the soil etc. .

The hangar is describes by in total five parameters.

  1. TotalHeight, which is essentially the maximum height of the portal frame;
  2. Height/TotalHeight, which is the ratio between column height and the maximum height of the frame;
  3. the width of the frame;
  4. the length of the structure; and
  5. the number of frames used within the structure.
