Introduction

A growing urban population means a growing pressure on civil engineering systems. Coupled with the density of those populations, some of those systems needs to perform as an integrated system, be it physically or functionally integrated. That interdependence calls for a holistic evaluation of the systems, regarding how they relate to each other, how their functions are complementary, or how they can be designed to better function together.

Looking into the integration process of multiple civil systems, the following aspects will be presented in this page:

  • five different civil systems, their ontologies and parametric models;
  • how those different systems can be integrated as components into a greater ‘system of systems';
  • how the individual ontologies can be merged into a combined ontology with new scope and goals;
  • and how a combined parametric model can illustrate interdependence in the design space.
